Ivy Tech Introduces students to an orientation of the CDL industry, the CDL license, driver qualifications, and the commercial vehicle. The vehicle control systems are reviewed and discussed. The vehicle systems including engine, suspension, electrical and many others are reviewed in detail. The vehicle inspection is practiced and applied. This course must be taken concurrently with LOGM 103 and 104.
Course Objectives:
- Discuss and review regulations in trucking
- Review driver qualifications
- Recognize key safety principles in operating a commercial vehicle
- Describe the engine controls as well as the primary and secondary vehicle
- Controls
- Identify and describe the controls for starting the engine, shifting, accelerating, braking, and parking
- Explain the acceptable operating range for oil, coolant, and electrical systems
- Identify and describe all vehicle instruments and their purpose
- Recognize basic vehicle construction and systems including: Suspension, Axles, Engine, Fuel, Exhaust, Air Intake, Electrical, Drive Train, Brake, Steering and Coupling Systems
- Use systematic procedure to conduct accurate and efficient vehicle inspection
- Identify damaged, loose, or missing parts
- Recognize and report system defects
- Explain why an undiscovered malfunction or vehicle problem can be unsafe and costly
- Explain the importance of having malfunctions corrected quickly.
